Apostille vs. certified translation in Chile.

An apostille authenticates a qualifying public document for international use. A translation conveys its text in another language. Depending on the recipient, you may need one, both or neither.

Different tasks in a document package

Authentication concerns the relevant official signature or capacity. It does not translate the text or establish the truth of everything stated in the document.

A translator’s certification identifies the professional responsible for a translation. It does not authenticate the foreign original or create universal acceptance.

Documents issued outside Chile

ChileAtiende’s guidance distinguishes foreign documents already apostilled from documents needing legalization. It also states that Chile does not apostille foreign-issued documents.

Consult the competent authority for the country of issue and the intended recipient. Cortés Traducciones handles the translation assignment, not issuance of an apostille for the foreign original.

Where FEA fits

Chilean Advanced Electronic Signature (FEA) concerns the electronic signature mechanism. When suitable, it may be included with a translator’s certification.

FEA is not an apostille, consular legalization or a guarantee that an institution abroad accepts the electronic file. Confirm its format rules.

Avoid ordering the wrong service

Keep the original, authentication pages and translation requirements together when requesting a quote. Ask the recipient to distinguish authentication of the original from certification of its translation.

If the instructions name MINREL, a private translator’s statement does not by itself satisfy that institutional requirement.

Before you send your documents

Does an apostille make a translation unnecessary?

No. It performs a different function. Whether a translation is needed depends on the language and recipient.

Can Chile apostille a document issued abroad?

ChileAtiende says no. Consult the appropriate authority in the country of issue.

Does FEA replace an apostille?

No. They serve different functions and must not be treated as interchangeable.
